Upcoming Performances
Doug Atiken's Lightscape
Lightscape is an innovative multimedia artwork created by the artist Doug Aitken in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. It’s a modern mythology propelled by music that asks the questions, “where are we now?” and “where are we going?” Lightscape is a shapeshifting act of contemporary storytelling that unfolds in various stages: a feature-length film, a multi-screen fine art installation, and a series of live musical performances.
The world premiere of the concert iteration of Lightscape caps off the LA Phil’s daylong Noon to Midnight: Field Recordings festival, with Grant Gershon leading the LA Phil New Music Group and the Los Angeles Master Chorale in a hypnotic series of original soundscapes and minimalist compositions to accompany Doug Aitken’s vivid moving images.

Handel-Mozart Messiah
In celebration of our 60th Anniversary, the LA Master Chorale presents the rarely performed Mozart version of Handel’s Messiah. A tribute from one musical genius to another—Mozart’s “cover” of Handel’s Messiah is a revelation of symphonic grandeur and sensuous orchestral colors. In this extraordinary collaboration across centuries, Mozart’s nuanced arrangement elegantly enhances the grandeur of Handel’s sacred masterpiece. This is a rare opportunity to experience a beloved classic in a totally new way.

Rufus Wainwright's Dream Requiem
The LA Master Chorale presents the highly anticipated U.S. premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s Dream Requiem. Dream Requiem merges two long standing creative visions — Wainwright’s fascination with Byron's poem Darkness, depicting global upheaval after the 1815 Mount Tambora eruption, and his lifelong admiration for the great Requiems of Verdi, Berlioz and Britten. This powerful and evocative modern-day requiem, with sublime harmonies and emotive storytelling, is an opulent composition that seamlessly weaves together Wainwright’s distinctive musical voice with the timeless liturgy of the Latin Requiem Mass.
New Renaissance
The LA Master Chorale concludes our monumental 60th Anniversary season with a spectacular celebration of harmony and innovation that honors our storied past, embraces the vibrant present, and set the stage for an exciting future. We are thrilled to present an extraordinary playlist of music ranging from Shakespeare’s England to the choral Renaissance happening in Los Angeles right now. These composers represent the creative forces that have both shaped the Chorale and solidified its place at the epicenter of the choral world.

Día de Los Muertos with Dudamel
Gustavo Dudamel leads a festive exploration of Latin American music for Día de los Muertos with Villa-Lobos’ progressive tour de force and Gabriela Ortiz’s 2019 Yanga. Her work for orchestra, chorus, and percussion ensemble is characterized by its use of African instruments and colorful, multilayered rhythms. Ortiz says, “[Yanga] speaks to the greatness of humanity when in search of equality and the universal right to enjoy freedom to the fullest.” Revueltas’ film score La noche de los Mayas digs deeper into Mexico’s ancient culture brought into conversation with the modern world, bolting through thunderous, dynamic rhythms and a flute interlude based on a traditional Yucatan evening song. Within the music is what poet Octavio Paz describes as Revueltas’ “deep-felt but also joyful concern for man.”

Handel's "Messiah"
Say “Hallelujah” as the Long Beach Camerata Singers perform this beloved masterpiece, now in its 16th year! This year we partner with the Tesserae Baroque Ensemble and award-winning soloists to share all your favorite arias and choruses.
Poulenc's Gloria
The Cathedral Choir and Laude present Gloria by Francis Poulenc at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Poulenc’s post-war setting of the “Gloria” is as expansive and celebrative as it is questioning. His use of word stress in opposition to metric stress creates an uneasy elation as the choir dances through these famous Christmas lyrics. The soprano solo, sung by Laurel Irene, floats angularly, an angel flying too close to earth caught up in humanity’s failures. Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the piece is Poulenc’s inventive orchestral colors. Played by Christoph Bull on The Great Organs, this timbral masterpiece returns to the organ-inspired home from which they came. To hear orchestral music of this ilk performed by Christoph Bull on The Great Organs is a treat not to be missed. The Cathedral Choir will lead this celebration directed by David Harris.
Free and open to the public.

Bach at Noon: Byrd is the Wyrd
Bach Collegium San Diego launches the BCSD TWENTYONE Bach at Noon series with a tribute to William Byrd (c.1540-1623), marking the quadricentennial of his death. Though among the most celebrated and influential composers of his day, in one way Byrd was an outsider to the mainstream: he was a Catholic in the wake of the rupture of the Church of England from Rome. Byrd is the Wyrd features some of Byrd’s most important contributions to both the Anglican and Catholic liturgical music repertories, including the Mass for Four Voices, and the Magnificat from the Great Service.
Tapestry of Time
Choral Arts Initiative presents the first concert of their 12th Season. Embark on a profound and introspective journey into the intricate tapestry of human existence and its interplay with time and the natural world. The Tower and the Garden by Gregory Spears presents a contemplative exploration of spirituality, history, and the consequences of human actions, using vivid imagery and allegorical elements to evoke emotions of wonder and regret. The Branch Will Not Break by Christopher Cerrone delves into themes of transience, loss, and the fleeting beauty of nature, enveloping the reader in poignant scenes and reflections on life's complexities. Both pieces invite us to ponder the significance of time, the human experience, and our profound connection to the natural world.
Eleanor Daley's Requiem
The Cathedral Choir and Laude perform Eleanor Daley’s deeply moving “Requiem” at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Set to texts by poets Clare Harner (“Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep”) and Carolyn Smart (“The Sound Of The Birds”), and passages from the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, her “Requiem” serves as a celebrative exploration of life. Compared to the Catholic death rite text, Daley created an a-religious work that delves into the grief surrounding the loss of a loved one and the joy in finding self in that loss. The work will be shared on All Saints Day as a way for those in attendance to commemorate their loved ones past. Those present are invited to bring memorabilia of loved ones to display. Solos by Tiffany Ho and Molly Pease, directed by David Harris.
Free and open to the public.
Peace Project VII – “The Worth of Water”
The Long Beach Camerata Singers present their seventh annual Peace Project performance. This year the theme is “The Worth of Water.” All of the music for the concert will refer to water in its libretto. For example, the repertoire will include Samuel Barber’s “To Be Sung on the Water,” “The Prow” by local composer Matthew Lyon Hazzard, and the traditional folk tune, “Oh Shenandoah,” among others. The music will be performed by a chorus of approximately 80 members. The Peace Project is distinguished by being a narrated concert. The narrator for Peace Project 7 “The Worth of Water” will be California State Assembly Member Josh Lowenthal.
‘Onipa’a: The Bravery of Gathering
The University of Redlands Vocal Chamber Music Consort presents “‘Onipa’a”. This concert focuses on choral repertoire as change agent for cultural shirts, righting wrongs, bridging divides, and understanding the collective other.
This event is free and open to the public.
